YouTube chapters split a video into labelled sections on the progress bar, so viewers can jump straight to the part they want. They matter most on long videos — a two-hour documentary without chapters asks viewers to scrub blind.
Adding them takes a few lines in the description, but YouTube is strict about the format, and one small mistake means no chapters at all. This guide gives YouTube's exact rules (from its Help Center, checked 26 October 2026), a format you can copy, and a checklist for when chapters won't show.
YouTube's rules for manual chapters
You add chapters by typing timestamps into the video description. YouTube's Help Center sets four rules, and all four must be met:
- The first timestamp must be 00:00.
- There must be at least three timestamps.
- Timestamps must be in ascending order.
- Every chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.
A chapter format you can copy
Put each timestamp at the start of its own line, followed by a short title. Use minutes:seconds, or hours:minutes:seconds once the video passes an hour:
- 00:00 Why the library mattered
- 04:12 Building the collection
- 19:40 The fire of 48 BC
- 41:05 The slow decline
- 1:02:30 What was really lost
Why YouTube chapters are not showing
If chapters don't appear on the progress bar, work through these in order — most problems are the first two:
- The first timestamp isn't 00:00 (0:01 or 00:05 doesn't count).
- Fewer than three timestamps, or one chapter shorter than 10 seconds — often a stray timestamp near the end.
- Timestamps out of order, or two lines with the same time.
- The channel has active strikes, or the video may be inappropriate for some viewers — YouTube says the chapters feature isn't available in those cases.
- The change hasn't refreshed yet: reload the watch page, or check on another device.
Automatic chapters
YouTube can also generate chapters itself. In YouTube Studio, each video has an "Automatic chapters" checkbox, ticked by default for new uploads. YouTube says not every video is eligible and not every eligible video will get them, so treat automatic chapters as a fallback rather than a plan.
Manual chapters always win: when your description has valid timestamps, they override automatic chapters.
Writing good chapter titles
- Name what happens, not the section number: "The fire of 48 BC", not "Part 3".
- Use the words viewers would search for — chapter titles are visible in the player and can help people find the moment they want.
- Keep them short enough to read on a phone progress bar.
- Match the narration: a chapter title the video doesn't deliver costs trust.
Chapters for long AI-made videos
Long narrated videos are where chapters pay off most, and they're easiest when the script was written in chapters to begin with. DreamTuber's scripts are chaptered by design, so the chapter list already exists — you note where each chapter starts in the finished video and paste the timestamps into the description. DreamTuber doesn't add chapter timestamps for you.

Create your first videoFrequently asked
Do I need a minimum number of subscribers for chapters?+
YouTube's chapter rules (00:00 first, at least three timestamps, ascending, 10 seconds each) don't mention a subscriber minimum. If chapters won't show, check the format and whether the channel has active strikes.
Do chapters affect monetization?+
No. Chapters are a navigation feature; they're not a Partner Program requirement and don't change ad eligibility.
How many chapters can a YouTube video have?+
At least three. YouTube doesn't state a maximum, but each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.
Can I add chapters after a video is published?+
Yes — edit the description in YouTube Studio and add the timestamps. Reload the watch page to see them.
Do chapters work on YouTube Shorts?+
Chapters are a feature of regular videos with a progress bar. Shorts are too short for the 10-second-per-chapter, three-chapter minimum to be useful.
